Briggs & Forrester Living have secured a £7.5m contract with Henry Boot Construction to refurbish the former Rowntree factory in York. The Cocoa Works scheme is being delivered for Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, and will see the neglected building, once responsible for making over one billion KitKats per year, restored to its former glory to provide 279 high quality, characterful apartments.
The apartments will be a mix of studio, 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms set within the former Rowntree factory, once again establishing a community feel that had been present at the site since the factory was built in the 1890’s until its closure in 2008.
We are excited to be involved in the careful restoration of a building steeped in history that for years was central to the economy of the city and provided open space and education facilities supporting the wellbeing of factory workers and their families.
The site located on Haxby Road will provide landscaped gardens and communal spaces, making use of the historic design features mixed with contemporary living essentials. Briggs & Forrester Living will be responsible for providing the design and installation of the mechanical, electrical and public health services on the project, with these elements due to commence on site in May 2022 and expected to be completed towards the end of 2023.
