The brief

Briggs & Forrester Special Projects completed an upgrade to the heating system at the BMW Mini plant in Oxford acting as Principal Contractor.

The car manufacturer had a requirement to upgrade their winter boiler plant by replacing the last two existing large steam boilers with a new low temperature boiler system. The system utilises two Hoval UltraGas 2 (3100D) boilers providing 6200kW complete with new flues, primary circulation pumps and a BMS controls system with the final pipework connections into an existing 35,000 litre thermal store. The new winter system complements their Hoval summer boilers installed 4 years prior completing the Building 92 boiler upgrade.

The upgrade provides a robust and efficient alternative to the old boilers that will satisfy the high heating demands of the paint spraying facility, with both boilers being able to operate in partial load condition to provide the most economical operating state.

On appointment it was discovered that the procurement periods for the flues from Germany did no fit within the project timescales. Briggs & Forrester Special Projects worked with the client, consult and and supply chain to develop an alternative solution and enable the re-engineered flue system to be installed and commissioned within the original contract period. The revised solution also simplified logistics and eliminated significant safety risks.

What we did for this project...

We have a fully integrated design and build capability across the group, including 3D coordination and Building Information Modelling. By developing the design and being fully involved in the early stages of a project, we can provide timely design solutions and verification.

The group provides a range of specialist skills encompassing engineering, design, installation, and maintenance. The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of all five divisions enables the group to develop and implement fully-integrated solutions for some of the most complex and demanding mechanical, electrical and public health engineering installations.

We guarantee a smooth handover transition with the project team remaining the main point of contact, the development of commissioning and training plan and regular visits from our team in the months after practical completion.

We offer the design, installation and commissioning of the full range of mechanical and electrical building services, providing turn-key solutions including buildersworks, groundworks, specialist finishes.

Our principal contracting capability has been developed in response to increasing demand from clients with projects requiring highly serviced refurbishment, critical plant replacement, infrastructure and fit-out works.
