The brief

The University of Reading’s new high quality Health & Life Sciences facility within this existing campus will provide 7,600m2 of lab, write up and museum areas over five floors. The BREEAM ‘Very Good’ building of which the third floor is a BRU area with class 3 labs, procedure rooms and holding rooms.

Briggs & Forrester were responsible for the mechanical and electrical service installations including domestic water, ventilation, heating & cooling, BMS, lab gases, fume cupboard ventilation, compressed air, steam, cold rooms, LV distribution, internal and external lighting, ICT, disabled refuge, fire alarm, access control, CCTV and lightning protection with photovoltaic as a low and zero carbon technology.

This was a particularly challenging project due to the demanding criteria that had to be met for Home Office Licensing and the need to complete for the new University term despite the challenges set as a result of Covid-19. However, the team worked incredibly well to overcome the challenges faced and delivered the project to a high standard. The University began their internal population of the teaching areas and Cole Museum immediately after handover.

What we did for this project...

We have a fully integrated design and build capability across the group, including 3D coordination and Building Information Modelling. By developing the design and being fully involved in the early stages of a project, we can provide timely design solutions and verification.

The group provides a range of specialist skills encompassing engineering, design, installation, and maintenance. The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of all five divisions enables the group to develop and implement fully-integrated solutions for some of the most complex and demanding mechanical, electrical and public health engineering installations.

We guarantee a smooth handover transition with the project team remaining the main point of contact, the development of commissioning and training plan and regular visits from our team in the months after practical completion.
