The brief

Design and construction of a space satellite manufacturing and testing facility. The multi-storey (varying internal heights) steel frame building consists of offices, clean rooms, STC suites, SVC suites, vibration room, 4 levels of internal plant space and an external plant space which runs the full width of the building at roof level. The building also includes numerous ISO 5 and ISO 6 classification clean rooms served by central HVAC plant.

MEP services included HV / LV / generator, LED lighting throughout, external lighting (LED), fire alarm, security & access control, CCTV, specialist earthing, data cabling, disabled systems, public health, natural gas, liquid and gaseous nitrogen, compressed air, LTHW & LGHW heating, CHW cooling, process cooling, AHU ventilation, DX local cooling and trend building management system.

Added value

This was a very highly serviced building with critical control parameters, the design was developed in close liaison with the building users to ensure their exacting standards were met. The specialist clean rooms & vacuum chamber contractors were an integral part of the design team, allowing a fully accessible service void to be incorporated into the building design. Secondly, the three main plantrooms were stacked one above the other, which simplified the required interfaces between the various services. All this taking place in a fully operational (24/7), occupied building.

This was the third of three phases on the overall project maintaining the same delivery team & sub-contractors was key to the success of the project.

What we did for this project...

We have a fully integrated design and build capability across the group, including 3D coordination and Building Information Modelling. By developing the design and being fully involved in the early stages of a project, we can provide timely design solutions and verification.

The group provides a range of specialist skills encompassing engineering, design, installation, and maintenance. The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of all five divisions enables the group to develop and implement fully-integrated solutions for some of the most complex and demanding mechanical, electrical and public health engineering installations.

We guarantee a smooth handover transition with the project team remaining the main point of contact, the development of commissioning and training plan and regular visits from our team in the months after practical completion.
