Taff Vale
Pontypridd, Wales
The redevelopment of the former Taff Vale Precinct providing up to 136,000 sq ft of new floor space with a new basement car park and servicing areas.
The brief
The ambitious Lls Cadwyn Development in Pontypridd was successfully delivered by the Briggs & Forrester Engineering Services Cardiff office. Working in collaboration with Rhondda Cynon Taff Council and Willmott Dixon, Engineering Services successfully delivered the mechanical, electrical and public health services on the project.
LLys Cadwyn is at the heart of Pontypridd’s regeneration, the new £42 project has transformed the gateway into Pontypridd, providing hundreds of new jobs in the town. The development comprised two new office blocks and an ovular gateway building. The scheme totals 14,693m2 of office space and was designed to regenerate the unused land which was the former Taff Vale shopping centre.
The first of the three buildings serves as the Transport for Wales (TfW) headquarters, the middle building comprises office space as well as a café and the third ovular building hosts the new library, council customer contact point and leisure and fitness centre. There is also an under croft car park with plant rooms servicing each building.

The complex design of the building together with its location in the town centre adjacent to the river Taff created technical challenges on the project for example; the delivery of materials. Briggs & Forrester ensured materials were delivered on a ‘just in time’ system which had to be booked in. Briggs & Forrester also used ‘Gripples Fast Trak’ system for suspending our containment. This system reduced install time and was also a much safer system to install over the normal practice of using unistrut and threaded rod as the brackets come pre-made which removes the need to cut brackets and the associated health and safety risks.
In order to increase the sustainability of the project and to reach a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent,’ Briggs and Forrester installed photovoltaic panels on the roof of the two office buildings, rainwater harvesting tanks in the plant rooms and used variable refrigerant flow air source heat pumps, one of the first hydrogen fuell cell CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems in wales, to generate heat and electricity for the Building C.
Briggs & Forrester Engineering Services were the Health & Safety Award Winners South West & Wales at Willmott Dixon Supply Chain Awards 2019.
Services: Mains Cold Water Supply, Incoming Natural Gas Supply, Above Ground Drainage, Domestic Hot & Cold Water Services, Heating/Cooling Plant and Distribution Systems, Supply and Extract Ventilation Systems, Car Park Smoke Clearance Ventilation Systems, Building Energy Management System (BEMS), Acoustic treatment to Ventilation equipment, Fire Protection System (Sprinklers), Site LV Infrastructure (the HV works are to be completed by SSE), Low Voltage Distribution, Cable Containment System, Lighting Installation, External Lighting, Small Power Installation, Multimedia services/TV to block C, Electrical Works Associated with Mechanical Plant and Equipment, Emergency Lighting, DDA alarms and Communications, CCTV and Access Control, Fire Detection and Alarms Installation, Earthing and Bonding, Structured Cabling and Photovoltaics
There has been an excellent standard of quality achieved on this project. Briggs & Forrester have an outstanding approach to their works and have a keen attention to detail. Health & safety management has been the best I have seen for a long time and as such Briggs & Forrester were awarded the Health & Safety Award at our annual Supply Chain Award Ceremony.
What we did for this project...
We have a fully integrated design and build capability across the group, including 3D coordination and Building Information Modelling. By developing the design and being fully involved in the early stages of a project, we can provide timely design solutions and verification.
The group provides a range of specialist skills encompassing engineering, design, installation, and maintenance. The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of all five divisions enables the group to develop and implement fully-integrated solutions for some of the most complex and demanding mechanical, electrical and public health engineering installations.
We guarantee a smooth handover transition with the project team remaining the main point of contact, the development of commissioning and training plan and regular visits from our team in the months after practical completion.
